CASE STUDY Last-Minute Photoshoot with Dubai’s Female Drone Racer
At the start of last Christmas holiday break, YEP faced an unexpected yet exciting challenge: a half-day photoshoot for a 21-year-old female drone racer from Dubai.
“With most professional studio photographers on holiday, finding available talent was nearly impossible.”
Fortunately, it was a week before our team was scheduled to leave for Indonesia, so I was still in Sydney. The team from The Signal Box invited YEP to their crafty studio space in Chippendale’s office, providing a unique opportunity to help capture this rising star.
About Drone Racing
Drone Racing is a high-speed competitive sport where participants control drones equipped with cameras, racing through complex courses at incredible speeds. Originating in the early 2010s, drone racing has rapidly gained popularity, with major leagues like the Drone Racing League (DRL) and MultiGP establishing international competitions. The sport combines cutting-edge technology with intense skill, making it a thrilling spectacle for both participants and spectators.
The Photoshoot
With accurate instructions from The Signal Box’s director, the help of assistants, a lighting crew and a bucket-load of coffee we had limited time to get the required assets for the online campaign featuring the drone racer. She had flown in for a day before heading to Melbourne, making our window of opportunity incredibly narrow.
The Execution
- Portraits in Race Gear: We started with dynamic portraits of the racer in her full race gear, including the helmet. These shots needed to exude confidence and energy, capturing her as both an athlete and a tech-savvy competitor.
- Fun Shots: Next, we moved to more playful images, such as her being carried away by drone units. These were designed to showcase her personality and the lighter side of the sport.
- Real-Time Feedback: The talent manager was on-site, evaluating the RAW imagery feed on a large plasma screen to ensure each shot met the campaign’s standards.
- Professional Styling: A dedicated make-up and hairstylist ensured that she looked perfect throughout the shoot, managing wardrobe changes and touch-ups seamlessly.
The Outcome
Despite the last-minute nature of the project, our team delivered stunning images that met and exceeded the client’s expectations.
